RURAL RETREAT

In a quiet bend of the landscape, a postmodern home stands in conversation with its environment. Once a bold statement of angular geometry and expressive form, the home has undergone a subtle yet powerful transformation, one that softens its edges and reconnects its interiors to the natural rhythms of the world outside.

The original structure, with its striking proportions and sculptural silhouette, embodied postmodern design. But over time, the homeowner sought to temper the once cold interiors with warmth.

Inside, the transformation is most noticeable in the sensory details: thick, handwoven bouclés, brushed wools, and stonewashed linens layer texture upon texture. These are not merely decorative choices, but emotional ones, as we wanted every surface to invite touch. There’s a kind of luxury in durability. Textiles that age gracefully, that don’t ask to be preserved, but to be lived in.

The furniture echoes this philosophy. Low-slung, sculptural pieces in tactile upholstery, complemented by vintage finds that wear their patina like a story. Sofas are oversized and inviting, their softened forms a quiet counterpoint to the home’s architectural lines. Window treatments, once stark or absent, are now rendered in flowing gauze and nubby wool, filtering light like sunlight through the trees.

This softened postmodern home is no less architectural in its presence, but it is more human. It honors the clarity and form of its original era while creating a richer emotional language with warmth, comfort, resilience, and reverence for nature.
